Italian Contest – New talent First work
Brief Synopsis:
In the heart of Piazza Florio, dedicated to the famous family of entrepreneurs, a meeting place for all ages and social classes, stands Tanam’s open-air home. From there, he listens to and observes us, applying “good manners” to aesthetics and behavior. As he ties his tie, he faces the threat of eviction, guarding our waste and caring for the square, attempting to be part of the society surrounding his daily life. Tanam’s gestures and gaze, where only a flowerbed divides private from public, reveal the paradox of social norms.
Director’s Notes:
I spent a lot of time with Tanam, who comes from Sri Lanka and has lived in Palermo for thirty years. As a homeless man, his rhythm and habits allowed me to access his gaze. In him and in the square, I saw the contradictory face of social rules and what it means to live as an outcast. His life reveals the gap between being and appearing, and the paradox of “well-behaving”. I filmed the square from his point of view, creating a sensorial tale of sounds, gazes, and movements.
