Concept and Philosofy

Founded in 2015, the International Documentary Festival Visioni dal Mondo was established to promote the documentary as a form of expression capable of interpreting, analyzing, and conveying the complexity of contemporary reality. In a world marked by quick and intense changes, the documentary stands as a privileged instrument of investigation, offering authenticity, depth of insight, and new perspectives on the present.

At the heart of Visioni dal Mondo is the enhancement of the Cinema of Reality: works that explore the major themes of national and international current affairs, highlighting social phenomena, economic dynamics, cultural transformations, and individual stories. The selected documentary films range from intimate narratives to observations of global contexts, from dramatic to comedic genres, contributing to a collective dialogue on ongoing transformations and the possible directions of contemporary History.

Visioni dal Mondo acts as a space for cultural exchange and reflection, but also as a place where the most personal stories – of tensions, hopes, and alternative lifestyles – become an expression of the challenges and possibilities of our time. Each edition reinforces this vocation through masterclasses with Italian and international directors (such as Nick Broomfield, Giorgio Diritti, Mario Martone, Luca Lucini, Pietro Marcello, Hugh Hudson, and Gianni Amelio, among others) that offer the public a privileged encounter with the cinema of reality.

The Festival’s mission also includes fostering the circulation and promotion of Italian auteur documentaries. Visioni dal Mondo is today a point of reference for the sector and a platform for visibility for works, directors, and producers who, thanks to the presence of festival directors, television channels, platforms, distributors, and national and international funding bodies, find new distribution opportunities. The long-standing partnerships with Rai and Luce Cinecittà, and the collaboration with Sky Italia and Mediaset, ensure further visibility and synergy within the sector. Simultaneously, the Festival addresses a broad and diverse audience: young film students, documentary enthusiasts, viewers attentive to the contemporary world, and a growing number of international visitors.

In 2016, consistent with its mission, Visioni Incontra was launched as the Festival’s industry market, designed to support the development of creative and contemporary documentary film. Among the first in Italy to offer a structured platform dedicated to projects in the development stage, Visioni Incontra facilitates the meeting of directors and producers with an Italian and international audience composed of broadcasters, commissioning editors, sales agents, distributors, television and film buyers, platform managers, and institutions. The dynamic environment encourages national and international co-productions, pre-sales and acquisitions for broadcaster networks, and distribution agreements for cinema or streaming platforms.

Through the pitching of selected projects, one-to-one meetings, and in-depth sessions with panels and roundtables, Visioni Incontra consolidates the Festival’s mission: to support the documentary as a form of art, knowledge, and cultural innovation, contributing to the growth of an ever-evolving sector and strengthening Visioni dal Mondo’s role as a national and international benchmark for the Cinema of Reality.
