Brief Synopsis:
An Italian cruise ship carrying passengers from all over the world is hijacked by a Palestinian commando. It’s the beginning of a three-day ordeal in 1985 that culminates in the murder of an American hostage and an armed standoff between two NATO allies to capture his killers. For the first time the entire story is told by first-hand witnesses from around the world. All of them, including: one of the Palestinian hijackers, who has never spoken on camera; the widow of their leader Abu Abbas; two British hostages; a Swiss mother held hostage with her toddler; the daughters of the American victim; the White House military adviser at the time; the US fighter pilot who forced down the plane carrying the hijackers; the Italian hostess who acted as the hijackers’ interpreter; the Italian base commander who managed the tense military showdown.
Director’s Notes:
A cruise ship is transformed into the stage of a tragedy, then a global flashpoint. The murder of a disabled passenger culminates in a standoff between two allies. The film shades light on the experiences that had lingered in the shadows: the suspended days, the fear, the enforced silences. A time machine – crafted entirely from archival footage and firsthand voices – to carry the viewer back into that story, moment by moment. Achille Lauro is a journey through memory, tracing the lines between diplomacy and violence, truth and denial.
