Abyss Clean Up – The movie
Synopsis:
Many are talking about plastic islands and microplastics dispersed in the sea.
However, recent studies have revealed an equally disturbing fact: much of the waste that ends up in the sea is deposited on the seabed, forming immense dumps that will last for centuries.
Starting from a recent scientific study that discovered an immense dump in Stretto di Messina, the filmmaker Igor D’India set out to identify accumulations of waste on the seabed between Sicily and Liguria, giving rise first to a web series and then to the idea of a feature film to raise awareness of the protection of the marine environment in search of possible solutions.

Director’s notes:
Submarine dumps are still partly unknown, because they have only recently been discovered. The aim of this film is to bring this issue to everyone’s attention. We still do not know much about their impact on the ecosystem, our health and that of our seas. After the one in Messina, other dumps have been identified, but how many still exist in the abyss? Is it possible to eliminate them and what does it mean to do it?
Production notes:
The shooting of the film ended in July 2023 thanks to the collaboration with Sea Shepherd and the many ‘friends of the sea’, who built around the film a network of solidarity, that also helped to carry out the last important mission in Stretto di Messina, also supported by the Region of Sicily cinema fund. Now the film is in post-production with the aim of presenting it at Green festivals since the beginning of 2024.

Since 2005 Igor D’India has been traveling the world to tell great adventure stories. From war zones in the Caucasus to rallies in Asia and Africa. He has carried out expeditions to Alaska, the Amazon and on the great rivers of the world.
His documentaries were broadcasted by National Geographic Italy, Redbull Media house and Amazon Prime.
