To exist
Synopsis:
This is the story of a father who embarks on the path to adopt the children he has raised since birth. His personal battle is part of a broader context: a country where the recent “Varchi Law” has made it even harder to become a parent through surrogacy (GPA) and placed a stigma on those already born. With firsthand accounts from other families who had children through surrogacy, and a critical reading of rulings from the Constitutional Court, To Exist opens up a space for urgent civic reflection:
Is it possible to ethically regulate surrogacy in Italy, protecting freedom and dignity without discrimination?

Director’s Notes:
The greatest challenge is telling your own story and showing those who share your life, turning the private into a public act—not objective, but honest. The documentary alternates intimate moments of daily life with a confrontation with political reality, in an essential staging where the concreteness of existence is measured against the language of law and the ability of politics to represent it.
Production Notes:
To exist is presented as a standalone documentary, but it is also part of a series, which the author dedicated to the formation of his family. The previous documentaries are First of All (awarded Silver Ribbon 2016) and All Together (2020). Together, the three documentaries follow the children from birth to adolescence, offering a portrait of the growth and everyday life of a rainbow family over the years. The 3 titles make a sentence: First of All, All Together Exist.
