Bengal’s Darkest Hour – the Famine and Churchill’s War
Synopsis:
India, 1943. While the world is at war, a devastating famine sweeps through Bengal. Despite desperate pleas, Churchill blocks all food shipments. In just a few months, 3.5 million Indian subjects of the Empire starve to death. This immense crime – buried and never told on screen – is uncovered through exclusive interviews with the last survivors (aged 93–107), restricted documents, and powerful visuals. Bengal’s Darkest Hour exposes a hidden tragedy of colonialism, censorship, and institutional racism – and confronts the roots of injustices that still resonate today.

Director’s Notes:
The documentary unfolds chronologically, with tension rising as events spiral. Each phase is told through testimonies, documents, and imagery, exposing the gap between those in power and their victims. With very elderly survivors, renowned historians, and descendants of key British figures, I also reveal obscure individuals whose hidden decisions played a dark, decisive role in this forgotten tragedy.
Production Notes:
The documentary is at an advacenced stage of development. We have completed the initial historical research and filmed the irreplaceable interviews with the last surviving centenarians in India – people who personally lived through the mass deaths in Calcutta and the villages. A first treatment has already been written, and we’ve launched the international funding phase by presenting the project at Sunny Side of the Doc. We are also developing a highly innovative visual approach.
