Brief Synopsis:

While the caretakers of the Ricci Oddi Gallery in Piacenza were busy with garden maintenance, they discovered a garbage bag in the wall’s cavities. Inside, they found Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of a Lady, the portrait stolen from the same gallery twenty-two years earlier.
A few months before the theft, a student had made a discovery that attracted international media attention: X-rays analysis revealed that hidden beneath the image of the woman was a first portrait Portrait of a Young Lady, painted by Klimt himself. Portrait of a Lady thus became one of the most famous cases of artistic Pentimento.
After more than two decades of investigations, false leads, suspicions, and reconstructions, it was learned with great astonishment that the painting never left the gallery walls. The case was closed in November, but its disappearance remains a mystery.
