Brief Synopsis:
When Irmy, a struggling comedian with a pregnant wife, goes to his father for money, he learns his only inheritance is a plot of land in the occupied Palestinian territories, land purchased by his great-grandmother before the State of Israel existed. As a lefty, Irmy’s torn. Does he have a claim to this land? Should he? Irmy decides to go see it…only to discover right-wing Jewish settlers have stolen it for a winery. Together with his father, Irmy takes on the settlers, the IDF, and Israeli government to get the land back. But the complex mechanisms of the occupation are well-prepared for him, and we get a rare view into exactly how they work in a Roger & Me-type journey that is both hilarious and damning.
Director’s Notes:
Our film follows a father and son trying to reclaim their only (and lost) inheritance: a small lot in a deeply conflicted area. What begins as a family and subjective journey becomes a deeper dive into the complex, painful, and absurd reality of Israel, Palestine, and the West Bank. Using low-tech animation, Irmy’s notebook doodles, archival footage, and comic narration, we spice up dry historical and legal facts and simplify complex issues in an attempt to better understand the land we call home.
